Mayiga Tells Newlyweds to Focus on Small Acts, Not Wealth

KAMPALA, Uganda — Buganda Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has urged couples to build their marriages on care, patience and daily kindness, saying success does not come from expensive cars or big houses.

Mayiga delivered the message earlier today at St. Francis Chapel, Makerere University during the wedding of Constance Nagawa Ssentongo and Calvin Atuhairwe. The service was led by Rt. Rev. Johnson Twinomujuni and attended by Buganda leaders, family members and friends.

“Success in marriage and indeed in life comes in those areas upon which we place our concentration,” Mayiga said. “Today we have witnessed Constance and Calvin making their vows. I congratulate them and wish them success in the journey they have started.”

He told the couple that marriage grows through attention to small but meaningful actions. He said tenderness, generosity, calmness and simple smiles matter more than material display.

“The success of marriage depends on the small things you concentrate on,” Mayiga said. “Not fancy cars or diamonds. Wealth is good, but it is not what gives marriage life. Love, trust, honesty and respect do.”

Mayiga also congratulated the parents of the couple, saying their children’s milestone reflected good upbringing and guidance over the years.

“I congratulate the parents as well,” he said. “This achievement shows how well you have nurtured your children.”

During the service, Rt. Rev. Twinomujuni reminded the couple that marriage is a shared journey that requires cooperation and faith. He said challenges are part of life and called on couples to rely on God, patience and understanding.

He urged forgiveness and calm dialogue when disagreements arise, noting that mistakes are human but lasting marriages are built through mercy and mutual respect.
