Google Rolls Out Gmail Address Change Feature, Allowing Users to Swap Email Names

Google has started rolling out a new feature that allows users to change their primary @gmail.com email address without creating a new account, ending a long-standing restriction that has frustrated users for years.

The update allows users to adopt a new Gmail address while keeping all their existing data, including emails, files, photos, purchases, and subscriptions. Previously, Gmail usernames were permanent, forcing users to open new accounts if they wanted a different address.

The feature is being introduced gradually and is not yet available to all users.

Tested in Select Regions

The change was first seen in Google support documents published in Hindi, suggesting that India is among the first countries to receive access. The English version of Google’s support page still says Gmail addresses usually cannot be changed, but the updated documentation points to a wider rollout in the coming weeks.

Google has not announced a timeline for global availability.

How the Feature Works

According to Google’s support information, eligible users can change their Gmail address through their Google Account settings on a computer.

The old email address is not removed. Instead, it becomes an alias linked to the account. Emails sent to both the old and new addresses will arrive in the same inbox.

All Google services, including Drive, Photos, YouTube, and Play Store purchases, remain unchanged. Users can also reverse the change if they wish.

Limits and Restrictions

To prevent misuse, Google has placed limits on the feature.

Users can change their Gmail address up to three times, allowing a total of four addresses per account. A waiting period of 12 months applies between changes.

The feature is not available to accounts managed by schools, workplaces, or organizations without administrator approval. It also does not apply to non-Gmail addresses linked to Google accounts.

Possible Disruptions

Google warns that some services may require re-authentication after the change. Third-party apps that use “Sign in with Google” may need to be reconnected. Some devices and shared services may also need updates.

Industry Reaction

Lawrence Nsubuga, an IT technician at VINAStech, said the update solves a common problem faced by users and businesses.

“Email accounts are the entry point to many online services,” Nsubuga said. “If the process is not handled well, users could temporarily lose access to important tools.”

He said the feature will reduce the need to abandon old accounts during rebranding.

“In the past, we had to create new email addresses for clients because Gmail addresses could not be changed,” Nsubuga said. “Many older accounts have numbers or informal names. This update is a relief.”

Gradual Rollout

Google said the feature is being released in stages. Users who do not see the option yet are advised to check their account settings regularly.

The update marks a shift toward more flexible digital identity management for Gmail’s billions of users worldwide.
