KAMPALA, Uganda — The Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court has further remanded former Kampala Lord Mayor and opposition politician Erias Lukwago to Luzira Prison until July 16, 2026, despite his lawyers presenting medical reports indicating that his health continues to deteriorate.
Lukwago, the president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), appeared before the court via video link from prison on Tuesday. During the session, he informed the court that specialists at Mulago National Referral Hospital had diagnosed him with five chronic medical conditions and recommended advanced treatment, including surgery in India, where he previously underwent a successful operation.
His legal team submitted medical reports from Mulago specialists stating that the required treatment is not readily available in Uganda. The reports indicate that Lukwago is suffering from complications arising from an earlier surgery, alongside other chronic health conditions that require specialized care.
The court, however, declined to release him, citing ongoing investigations, and ordered that he remain on remand until the next mention of the case on July 16.
Lukwago is jointly charged with misprision of treason, an offence under Uganda’s Penal Code that alleges a person had knowledge of an alleged treason plot but failed to report it to the authorities. Prosecutors claim that he and his co accused were aware of an alleged plan to overthrow the government but deliberately concealed the information. Lukwago has consistently denied the allegations, describing the charges as politically motivated.
The veteran opposition politician was previously admitted to Mulago National Referral Hospital after concerns emerged over his health while in custody. His family and legal team have since been seeking permission for him to travel abroad for specialized treatment, arguing that his condition cannot be adequately managed within the country.
The case is expected to return to the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on July 16, when prosecutors are expected to update the court on the progress of investigations.
