Kampala, Uganda – Msgr. John Baptist Kauta, Secretary General of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, has announced a solemn Requiem Mass for His Holiness Pope Francis, to be held at Rubaga Cathedral on Friday, April 25, 2025, at 12:00 noon. The announcement was made on behalf of Bishop Joseph Anthony Zziwa, Chairman of the Conference, as a tribute to the late pontiff’s enduring legacy. The Mass, to be celebrated by Papal Nuncio Archbishop Luigi Bianco, will unite Ugandans in prayer for the Pope who championed peace and humility. This event underscores Rubaga Cathedral’s significance as a spiritual center for Uganda’s Catholic community.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina in 1936, served as the 266th Pope from 2013 until his passing in 2025. Renowned for his simplicity, he chose the name Francis to reflect his commitment to the poor, inspired by St. Francis of Assisi. His papacy emphasized social justice, environmental stewardship through his encyclical Laudato Si’, and interfaith dialogue. His global influence touched Uganda, where his messages resonated with the nation’s strong Catholic population, comprising about 39% of the population.
Rubaga Cathedral holds a special connection to Pope Francis, as it was a key site during his historic visit to Uganda in November 2015. He celebrated Mass there, drawing thousands of faithful to the cathedral, a symbol of Ugandan Catholicism since its establishment in 1925. The visit, part of his first African tour, also included a stop at Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrine, honoring Uganda’s martyred saints. This connection deepens the significance of the upcoming Requiem Mass at the cathedral.
On Saturday, April 26, 2025, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among will lead a Ugandan delegation to attend Pope Francis’ burial in Rome. This gesture reflects the nation’s respect for the pontiff, who inspired unity and compassion during his tenure. Among, a prominent Catholic, has expressed admiration for his teachings on social equity and forgiveness. The delegation’s attendance will strengthen Uganda’s ties with the Vatican, a relationship nurtured through shared faith and values.
The Requiem Mass will be broadcast live on Uganda Catholic Television, allowing Ugandans nationwide to join in mourning. Bishop Zziwa has called for prayers for Pope Francis’ soul, noting his role as a “true shepherd” who guided the Church with wisdom. Rubaga Cathedral, also known as Lubaga, will open its doors early for mourners to gather. This event marks a moment of reflection for Uganda, honoring a Pope whose humility left an indelible mark.
