According to the school’s head teacher, Rev. Dick Alengo, Marvin began feeling unwell on June 9, prompting the school administration to immediately notify his parents and recommend further treatment.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Marvin. He was part of our family and a promising young man with a bright future ahead of him,” Alengo said. “As a school, we shall support part of the burial arrangements because this loss has affected us greatly.”

Deputy Head Teacher Samuel Okumu said the school had been aware of Marvin’s health condition and had maintained communication with his parents regarding his medical needs.

“He had experienced health challenges before, and the school administration always worked closely with his family whenever he required medical attention. Unfortunately, this time he could not recover,” Okumu said in a telephone interview.

Nixon Olang, Marvin’s class teacher in Senior Six Science B, described him as a disciplined, respectful and hardworking student who was committed to his studies despite his health struggles.

“He was humble, focused and determined to succeed. His death is a painful loss not only to his classmates but also to the entire school community,” Olang said.

Students and staff were visibly emotional as news of Marvin’s death spread across the school campus. Several students gathered in small groups to comfort one another and pay tribute to their late colleague.

Marvin hailed from Omoro Village in Alebtong District. Family members said burial arrangements are underway, with the funeral expected to take place at his ancestral home early next week.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects the shape and function of red blood cells. The abnormal cells can block blood flow, leading to severe pain episodes, anemia, infections and damage to vital organs. The condition remains a significant public health challenge in Uganda and across sub-Saharan Africa.

According to health experts, individuals living with sickle cell disease require regular medical monitoring and are advised to stay well hydrated, avoid extreme temperatures, prevent infections and seek immediate medical attention whenever they experience fever, severe pain or breathing difficulties.

Medical professionals note that with early diagnosis, proper treatment and consistent care, many people living with sickle cell disease can lead productive lives. However, severe complications can sometimes become life-threatening.

The death of Marvin has left a profound void among his classmates, teachers and family members, who remember him as a resilient student who pursued his education with determination despite the challenges posed by his illness.
