President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni wrapped up his tour of the Kigezi sub-region, aimed at assessing the Parish Development Model (PDM). The tour, which began on February 12, concluded today in Rukungiri, where he addressed over 900 local leaders, emphasizing the transformative power of PDM in elevating Uganda’s rural economy. The visit was marked by a series of engagements, each telling a story of transformation, challenges, and the government’s commitment to economic growth.
In Kisoro, he started his tour by visiting Angelo Nsekanabo, whose participation in the Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) program had seen his dairy business expand from one cow to seven, now sustaining his family and contributing to the local economy. This success story was a testament to the potential of government initiatives when effectively utilized.
Moving to Kabale, Museveni commissioned the Rushoroza Road, a project that not only improves connectivity but also symbolizes the journey from isolation to integration into the broader economic landscape. His visit to the Kabale substation in Hamuko to launch the 132 KV Mirama-Kabale Transmission Line further emphasized the government’s focus on infrastructure as a bedrock for development.
In Rubanda, the President met Akampurira Evas, a poultry farmer whose success under PDM became a beacon for others. Her story of establishing an egg processing factory was highlighted as a model for value addition in agriculture. Museveni pushed for more such initiatives to strengthen the economy, improve nutrition, and tap into international markets.
During his stop in Kanungu, he met Kenneth Ayesiga, who, with PDM funds, had opened the Parish Model Restaurant and expanded into piggery, generating significant profits. This demonstrated the versatility of PDM in supporting diverse income-generating activities.
Museveni also took time in Rukiga to address a public rally, urging residents to actively engage with government programs. He praised the resilience of individuals like Doreen Yapsiwa, who had transformed her life through PDM, but also warned against the non-commercial activities that do not contribute to wealth creation.
Environmental concerns were not overlooked; in a move to protect Kigezi’s natural resources, Museveni directed farmers to cease cultivation and fishing in wetlands, advocating for sustainable use of these areas for fish farming and preservation.
The tour culminated in Rukungiri, where he met with a large group of leaders, reinforcing the message of prioritizing wealth creation over politicization. He discussed the PDM’s impact, the importance of education, and the need to fight corruption to ensure funds reach the grassroots level.
As President Museveni concluded his visit, he has left the Kigezi sub-region with a clear message of continued government support for PDM, aiming to integrate more Ugandans into the money economy, fostering a sense of hope and direction towards a more prosperous future.
