MBARARA CITY, Uganda — The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has increased the Uganda Premier League prize pool from UGX 128 million to UGX 600 million, with the league champions set to receive UGX 200 million from the next financial year.
FUFA President Moses Hassim Magogo announced the new prize structure on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, during the federation’s 102nd Ordinary General Assembly at Hotel Triangle in Mbarara City.
Under the new arrangement, the league champions will receive UGX 200 million, up from UGX 60 million. The runners up will earn UGX 100 million, while the remaining prize money will be shared among other clubs based on their final positions.
Magogo said the increase has been made possible by improved revenue from government, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA.
“We have received good news recently from our sources of income, including government, CAF and FIFA,” Magogo told delegates.
He said the increased funding will also support other areas of Ugandan football in the next financial year.
Across all FUFA competitions, the total cash prize package will rise from UGX 735 million to UGX 1.54 billion. FUFA also plans to introduce medical insurance for Big League clubs while improving the facilitation and salaries of referees, match delegates and federation staff.
The changes come as CAF increases annual funding to its member associations. FUFA is expected to receive up to about UGX 2.83 billion annually under the new arrangement. FIFA has also proposed increased development funding for the 2027 to 2030 cycle, although the final package is yet to be approved.
The increase in UPL prize money comes after years of criticism over the financial rewards offered to clubs in Uganda’s top division. Before the change, the champions received UGX 60 million, while teams finishing at the bottom could receive as little as UGX 500,000.
The new package is expected to give clubs a stronger financial incentive as they compete for the national title and seek to build more sustainable operations.
The announcement also comes as Uganda prepares to co host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Kenya and Tanzania, putting greater attention on the development and professionalisation of the domestic game.
