PARLIAMENT: 120 of 553 MPs invited to the Prayer breakfast

KAMPALA, Uganda — Only 120 of Parliament’s 553 members have been invited to the 28th Uganda National Prayer Breakfast scheduled for 8th October at State House in Entebbe, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa told Parliament.

Tayebwa said the limited number of invitations was a result of the need to accommodate leaders from across government and other sectors at the annual gathering.

The breakfast brings together representatives from the three arms of government, the business community, diplomatic missions and other local and international guests. The event is held on the eve of Uganda’s Independence Day celebrations.

Tayebwa said the invitations were handled by the organizers of the breakfast rather than Parliament as a whole.

He joked that the MPs who received invitations would represent their colleagues who were not selected. He also asked MPs who believed their prayers “reach God” but had not received invitation cards to contact David Bahati, who is involved in organizing the event.

President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend as chief guest, while Speaker Jacob Oboth will be the chief host. Former Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger is listed as the keynote speaker.

This year’s breakfast will be held under the theme “Wake Up, Work Hard, Build Uganda,” taken from Proverbs 20:13.

Organizers have also lined up testimonies from Bishop Nathan Ahimbisibwe of Ankole Diocese and Gaster Rule, proprietor of Ntake Bread.

The main breakfast will be preceded by two related events on Oct. 7. A Women’s Forum will be held at Speke Resort Munyonyo, while a Business Forum is scheduled for the Parliament Conference Hall.

Tayebwa said the business forum is intended to give the private sector an opportunity to engage with Parliament and challenge the perception that the institution is accessible only to a particular group.

Emmanuel Katongole, chairman of Quality Chemical Industries, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the business forum.

Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi responded to Tayebwa’s remarks about the selected MPs, joking that the organizers should also make room for the “sinners.” He cited the biblical teaching that all have sinned and said those who were not invited could still pray for the country and put those prayers into action.

The 2026 event will be the 28th National Prayer Breakfast. The previous gathering, held at State House in Entebbe on Oct. 8, 2025, was conducted under the theme “The Power of Forgiveness and Reconciliation.” President Museveni credited Parliament with maintaining the annual tradition and said its inspiration came from the National Prayer Breakfast movement in the United States.

Parliament has also announced plans for an ecumenical service on Oct. 23, with Speaker Oboth saying the service would be held at Parliament as part of efforts to keep costs down.
