In an awe-inspiring display of speed and endurance, Uganda’s very own Jacob Kiplimo has not only made history but rewritten the record books at the Barcelona half marathon. The 24-year-old from Kapchorwa District sprinted to the finish line in a staggering 56 minutes and 42 seconds, becoming the first person ever to run a half marathon under 57 minutes.
The previous record, held by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha at 57:30, was broken by a remarkable 48 seconds, marking the largest single improvement in the men’s half marathon record to date. Kiplimo’s pace was nothing short of phenomenal, averaging 22.3 kilometers per hour, which left competitors Geoffrey Kamworor and Samwel Mailu of Kenya far behind, securing second and third places respectively.
Reflecting on his race, Kiplimo expressed, “Everything was perfect today. No wind, cool weather, and a fantastic track. I felt so energetic that I pushed harder from the third kilometer. I never expected to break 57 minutes; it’s just astonishing.”
This incredible feat has put a spotlight on Ugandan athletics, showcasing the raw talent and determination that our athletes possess. Kiplimo, however, is not resting on his laurels. He has his eyes set on the marathon next, planning to make his debut at the London Marathon in April after some well-deserved recovery time.
Meanwhile, the women’s race saw Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei setting a new course record with a time of 1:04:13, closely followed by her compatriot Gladys Chepkurui and Ethiopia’s Alemtsehay Zerihun.
Uganda celebrates this monumental achievement by one of our own, as Jacob Kiplimo’s name is now etched in the annals of athletic history. His journey from Kapchorwa to global recognition is a testament to the spirit of Ugandan sportsmanship and a beacon of inspiration for young athletes across our nation.
